Sunset on the Cliffs of Big Sur – This area is a rugged and mountainous section of the Central Coast in the state of California, it lies between Carmel Highlands and San Simeon, where the Santa Lucia Mountains rise abruptly from the Pacific Ocean. It is frequently praised for its dramatic scenery especially with the "beauty in detail" of its tall cliffs hugging the shoreline. Big Sur has been called the "longest and most scenic stretch of undeveloped coastline in the contiguous United States" a sublime "national treasure that demands extraordinary procedures to protect it from development," and "one of the most beautiful coastlines anywhere in the world.
The Esselen are the Native Americans that were the original occupants of this area, belonging to a linguistic group in the hypothetical Hokan language family; who are Indigenous to the Santa Lucia Mountains of a region south of the Big Sur River, which is a 15.7-mile-long river that flows through a lagoon and sandbar into the Pacific Ocean. The Esselens like many Native American populations, their members were decimated at the hands of the European invaders by starvation, forced labor, over work, torture, and diseases that they had no natural resistance to. Historically, they were one of the smallest Native American populations in California.
