Sunrise at Virginia Beach– Virginia Beach is the most populous city in the U.S. commonwealth of Virginia. The city is located on the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay in southeastern Virginia; near the point where the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean meet. Virginia Beach is a resort city with miles of beaches and hundreds of hotels, motels, and restaurants along its oceanfront. Unlike the other places shown in this collection the artist has very personal connection to this place; this area is his birthplace where he was raised. It is also unlikely, as a child, that the artist could have ever witnessed this magnificent sunrise at the oceanfront in Virginia Beach; simply because black people were not allowed on the oceanfront at that time.

To put things in proper perspective Virginia Beach was no more racially biased than any other city of its size in the Jim Crow South at that time. Prior to 1969, separate schools were maintained for black and white students. Before 1938, black students who wished to attend school past seventh grade had to travel to Norfolk and pay tuition to attend Booker T. Washington High School. In 1938, the first high school for blacks, the Princess Anne County Training School was built. In 1961, in order to avoid the stigma of the term "training school", the school was renamed Union Kempsville High School at the request of the black community. When the public schools integrated in 1969, Union Kempsville was closed.

The Chesepian were the historic indigenous people of the area now known as Tidewater in Virginia, at the time of European encounter, they occupied an area which is now defined as the independent cities of Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach. They would have spoken one of the Algonquian languages. These were common languages among the numerous tribes of the coastal area, who made up many of the loose Powhatan Confederacy, numbering in the tens of thousands in population. Virginia Beach have some of the most radiant sunrises in the world illuminating all the "beauty in detail" on its coastal shoreline.
