Strong Currents at Tillamook Head– Tillamook Head is a high promontory on the Pacific coast in northwest Oregon. It is located in west-central Clatsop County, approximately 5 miles southwest of the Seaside city limits. This distinctive promontory forms a steep rocky bluff on the ocean, approximately 1,200 ft. high, and is forested with Sitka spruce. Geologically: Tillamook Head is a tilted remnant of a massive, 15-million-year-old Columbia River basalt flow (volcanic action). Amazingly, the lava welled up near Idaho, flooded down the Columbia Gorge, and spread along the seashore to this point.
The promontory is named after the Tillamook, a Salishan-speaking tribe of Native Americans who inhabited the coast south of the promontory in the 19th century. In fact, it the farthest point reached by the Lewis and Clark expedition with the explorative skills of Sacajawea, the Indian woman who was a magnanimous contributor toward the exploration of the American West from the Mid-West all the way to the Pacific coast. Sacagawea played a crucial role in the Lewis and Clark Expedition by: Serving as a guide through unfamiliar territories, providing valuable knowledge of local geography and resources; acting as a translator between the expedition members and Native American tribes; contributing her skills in foraging and identifying edible plants.
Sakakawea did all this as a teenager while carrying her infant son on her back in an Indian cradleboard, which symbolized peace and goodwill to other tribes establishing peaceful relations with many indigenous peoples they encountered all along the way. Notice that her name was spelled three different ways as the pronunciational sonics were heard two ways SAK-ə-jə-WEE-ə or sə-KOG-ə-WAY-ə; although she was dead by the age of 25, can you not see all the "beauty in detail" that this woman's exploration shown us in the unique features of Tillamook Head along with the remarkable legacy that she left behind?
