Pleasant View Lookout– This place is Glacier National Park located in the northwestern part of Montana, on the Canada–United States border. This park encompasses 1 million acres and includes parts of two sub-mountain ranges of the Rocky Mountains, with more than 130 named lakes, more than 1,000 different species of plants, and hundreds of species of animals.
This vast pristine ecosystem is the centerpiece of what has been referred to as the "Crown of the Continental Ecosystem", a region of well protected land encompassing 16,000 sq. miles all of which is a primarily untouched wilderness of true pristine quality. The "beauty in detail" is virtually all the plants and animals which existed at the time European explorers first entered the region are present in the park today.
A total of over 1,132 plant species have been identified parkwide. Glacier is part of a large preserved ecosystem collectively known as the "Crown of the Continent Ecosystem", in fact, the The park has numerous ecosystems, ranging from prairie to tundra. Large mammals such as American black bear, grizzly bear, bighorn sheep, elk, moose, mountain lion and mountain goats, as well as gray wolf, wolverine and Canadian lynx inhabit the park. Hundreds of species of birds, more than a dozen fish species, and quite a few reptiles and amphibian species have been documented. Numerous species of butterflies and other pollinating insects have been doucmented as well.
Of course, the region that became Glacier National Park was first inhabited by Native Americans. Upon the arrival of European explorers, it was dominated by the Blackfeet Tribe in the east and the Flathead Tribe in the western regions. Under pressure, the Blackfeet ceded the mountainous parts of their treaty lands in 1895 to the federal government which became part of the park. The body of water is known as Saint Mary Lake.
