Old Hand Pump–The concept of Hand pumps may be kinda ancient but, they're widely used in every country in the world today for a variety of industrial, marine, irrigation and leisure activities The hand pump is a manually operated pump; they use mostly human power and mechanical advantage to move fluids or air from one place to another.

There are many different types of hand pump available, mainly operating on a piston, diaphragm or some rotary vane principle with a check valve on the entry and exit ports to the chamber operating in opposing directions. Most hand pumps are either piston pumps or plunger type pumps.

The earliest hand pumps date back to ancient civilizations about 2000 BC. The 1st modern hand pump was patented in the mid 19th century specifically in 1851. Hand pumps became widely used in rural areas for water supply during the 19th century and are still being used today in various applications especially in most developing regions of the world.

Many modern hand-operated community pumps are really considered the most sustainable low-cost option for safe water supply in resource-poor settings, often in rural areas in developing countries. A hand pump opens access to deeper groundwater that is often not polluted and also improves the safety of a well by protecting the water source from contaminated buckets. When all consideration is given to the way this design concept have served humanity the "beauty in detail" of technological developments that derived with the use of this device are nothing short of staggering.
