Mid Fall at the Androscoggin River in New Hampshire– The Androscoggin was once heavily polluted by a variety of textile mills, paper mills, and other industries located along its banks, and helped inspire the Clean Water Act. From the 1940s through the 2000s, the Androscoggin was so polluted that some environmental groups listed it as one of the 20 most polluted rivers in the United States. At one point the pollution became so severe that a 14-mile stretch required oxygen bubblers in the water to prevent fish from suffocating. Since the clean-up the Androscoggin River is a popular destination for all sorts of fishing enthusiast from fly fishing for brook, brown and rainbow trout to bass fishing and is also know for recreational water activities like paddling and skiing. Currently, the scenery along the banks of the one-time mired up river is simply breathtaking.
